The 38-Year Search for Where the Butterflies Went
January 1976, a mountainside in Michoacán. Fred Urquhart is standing in a fir forest where the trunks are not grey but orange, because every surface is three-deep in butterflies. A branch snaps under the weight and spills thousands of them across the ground — and somewhere in that spill he picks up one carrying a small white paper tag. The tag traces back to a schoolteacher in Chaska, Minnesota. That is the moment a butterfly quiz stopped being a party game for me, because it is the moment somebody proved that a half-gram insect had crossed most of a continent on purpose.

Urquhart had been chasing that answer since the 1930s. The problem was brutally simple and almost unsolvable: monarchs vanish from North America every autumn, and nobody knew where they went. You cannot follow one. You cannot fit a radio to something that weighs less than a paperclip. So he built an adhesive tag that would stick to wing scales without grounding the butterfly, and then he did the only thing left — he recruited strangers. Thousands of volunteers across the continent spent decades catching monarchs, writing on tags, and posting in record cards.
Almost forty years of that produced one useful minute. The tag Urquhart found in Michoacán closed the loop between a garden in Minnesota and a hillside in Mexico, and the whole monarch migration fell into place at once. Here is the part that still gets me, though. The butterfly that arrives in Mexico has never been there. Going north takes three to five successive generations, each living a few weeks; the return leg is flown by one long-lived autumn generation that makes the entire trip alone. No individual has ever done the full circuit, and no individual is taught the route. It is inherited, and it works.
Wings Are a Public Statement, Not a Paint Job
Which brings us to why the monarch can afford to be that colour. Flying 4,000 km in bright orange, slowly, at bird height, should be suicide. It isn't, because monarch caterpillars eat milkweed and hoard its cardenolides — steroids that interfere with heart function — and keep them through metamorphosis. A bird that eats a monarch is violently sick within minutes and never tries a second one. The orange is not decoration. It is a label, and the label is true.
Biologists call that aposematism, and once you know it exists you start reading butterflies differently. Every wing in this quiz is a solution to the same predator problem, and there are only about four solutions available. Advertise honestly, like the monarch. Advertise dishonestly, by resembling something that does. Disappear into the background, like the comma. Or disappear altogether, like the glasswing, whose wings are genuinely see-through. Colour isn't taste. It's strategy — the same way the flower quiz treats petals as advertising aimed at pollinators rather than at us.
The Textbook Example That Turned Out to Be Wrong
Now the fun part. If you learned any butterfly biology at school, you learned that the viceroy is a fraud — a harmless species that evolved monarch colours to freeload on a reputation it never earned. That was the single most-cited example of Batesian mimicry for close to a century. It is also wrong.
In 1991 David Ritland and Lincoln Brower ran the experiment nobody had bothered with. The trouble with testing the viceroy is that predators react to the wings, so any result is contaminated by the visual resemblance. Their fix was to remove the variable entirely: they offered red-winged blackbirds viceroy abdomens with the wings taken off. If viceroys were harmless impostors, the birds would eat them happily. The birds rejected them. Viceroy caterpillars feed on willow and poplar and carry salicylates of their own — the pair is Müllerian mimicry, two genuinely unpleasant species sharing one warning sign and splitting the cost of educating every young bird in the county.
I kept that result in the quiz because it produces a genuinely useful personality type. The Viceroy is not the copycat result. It's the result for people who are permanently read through somebody else, who have the substance to back their own reputation, and who long ago worked out that correcting the record costs more than it returns.
Here's the Part That Still Doesn't Feel Real
There is no blue pigment in a blue morpho. None. Grind up the wing and you get brown dust. That electric cobalt is geometry: each scale carries rows of ridges with branching lamellae stacked roughly 200 nanometres apart, and that spacing reflects blue wavelengths while cancelling everything else — the same physics that puts colours in an oil slick. Wet the wing with alcohol and the blue disappears, because the alcohol changes the refractive index between the layers. Let it evaporate and the blue comes back.
Two things follow. First, morphos photograph badly — the colour shifts with angle, so a photo flattens it into something ordinary, which is why the result panel says "never once photographed correctly". Second, the underside is drab brown with eyespots. A morpho in flight is a strobe; a morpho at rest is gone. Predators end up chasing a signal that keeps switching off. If that sounds less like camouflage and more like a personality, you have understood the design of this quiz.
Four Axes, and Why Colour Isn't One of Them
Most butterfly quizzes ask which colour you like and hand you a butterfly that matches. That gets the causality backwards, because in butterflies colour is the output, not the input. So this one never asks. Eighteen questions place you on four axes that lepidopterists actually use, and the result is whichever of eight real species sits nearest your coordinates.

The interesting collisions happen where two species share three axes and split on the fourth. Viceroy and zebra longwing are near-identical on signal, range and defence — both stay put, both are genuinely unpalatable, both wear stripes people read as a warning. They diverge entirely on company, and that one axis is why questions 4, 13 and 16 exist. Monarch, meanwhile, sits in an extreme corner: loud, toxic, restless and willing to cluster in thousands. Only 7.6% of answer paths reach it, which we know because we simulated 200,000 of them before publishing.
Does Anything Survive the Chrysalis?
Everyone repeats that the caterpillar dissolves into soup. It's roughly half true — larval tissue really does break down — but much of the adult grows from imaginal discs that were sitting in the caterpillar the whole time, and parts of the nervous system are remodelled rather than destroyed. Which raises an obvious question, and in 2008 Douglas Blackiston, Elena Silva Casey and Martha Weiss went and tested it.
They trained tobacco hornworm caterpillars to associate the smell of ethyl acetate with a mild electric shock, then let them pupate. The adult moths avoided the odour. A memory formed by an animal with a completely different body, mouth and brain had survived being taken apart and rebuilt. Worth being precise: Manduca sextais a moth, so this is evidence about Lepidoptera generally rather than proof about the eight butterflies here. It's still the finding I think about most, and it's why question 15 asks how much of you is still fifteen. If you answered "the skills survived, the person didn't", you gave the entomologically correct answer.

👑 Monarch — the rarest outcome at 7.6%. Maximum visibility backed by real chemistry, plus a willingness to travel further than makes any sense. Monarchs are the only result that pairs loud advertising with genuine toxicity and tolerance for crowds. The weakness is dependence: the entire strategy rests on one plant family, and milkweed loss is exactly why overwintering numbers have fallen so steeply.
💠 Blue Morpho — spectacular in motion and completely unavailable at rest, because the blue is structural and switches off the moment the wings close. Morphos hold small territories, patrol the same forest streams, and feed on fermenting fruit rather than flowers. Enormous impact, almost no defences, and a habit of being remembered without ever being described accurately.
🧭 Painted Lady — the most widely distributed butterfly on earth and the least armoured result in the set. Its answer to danger is distance: a European painted lady population runs a 12,000 km relay to sub-Saharan Africa and back across six generations. Adaptable, restless, undefended, and almost impossible to trap anywhere.
🎭 Viceroy — assumed to be a copy for a century and vindicated in 1991. Resident, territorial, willow-tied, and genuinely unpalatable in its own right. This is the result for anyone whose substance is real but permanently attributed to somebody more famous, and who has stopped trying to correct it.
🫧 Glasswing — the lowest signal score in the quiz paired with one of the highest defence scores, which is a combination people misread constantly. Nanoscale pillars kill reflection so the wings are properly transparent, while the adults drink alkaloids from flowers to become unpalatable. Unreadable and genuinely dangerous to try.
🗡️ Swallowtail — the most common result at 16.1% and the most balanced. Caterpillars deploy a foul-smelling osmeterium; adults use hindwing tails and eyespots to fake a head at the wrong end, so a bird strikes the disposable part. This is the damage-control result: deciding in advance which piece of you can afford to be lost.
🌙 Zebra Longwing — the only butterfly here that eats pollen, which is why it lives for months rather than weeks. It flies a learned traplining route in the same order daily and returns to a communal roost with the same individuals night after night. Everything about it compounds, and nothing about it is fast.
🍂 Comma — ragged wing edges that break up the outline into a chewed leaf, and adult hibernation rather than the usual pupal wintering, so commas fly in March while other species are still eggs. It even runs two seasonal forms, one that breeds again immediately and one that writes off the year. Patience as an actual strategy.
If You Wanted the Monarch and Got the Comma
People want the monarch. It's famous, it's the migration story, and it's rare here on purpose. But look at what the monarch actually buys: a strategy so specialised that one missing plant genus threatens the entire population. The comma has no toxins, no crowd and no route — and it will be flying on the first warm day of March, while the celebrated species are still eggs waiting on somebody else's milkweed.
If you want to do something with the result rather than just read it, take the two-axis version. Find your lowest score and ask whether it is a deliberate trade or an unexamined default. Low Company with high Range is a real strategy that costs you continuity; low Signal with high Defence means you are dangerous to underestimate and nobody knows it, which is efficient right up until you need someone in your corner.
