So when you missed the Golem question above, the real cost wasn't a trophy. It was not knowing that a Golem player is committing 8 of a possible 10 elixir and will be defenceless for about twenty seconds afterwards β which is the entire window their opponent is playing for.
Four Trades That Win Matches, With the Arithmetic
A positive elixir trade means you spent less to stop something than your opponent spent to send it. Stack up a couple of those and you eventually have enough left over to build a push they cannot answer. These four are the cleanest examples in the game, and they cover an enormous share of what actually happens in a match:

When Should You Actually Spend the Zap?
The Zap button in this quiz costs 3 elixir and halves what the battle pays, which mirrors a real decision the game asks constantly. Zap is 2 elixir of instant, low damage β it will never carry a defence on its own, and its value is entirely in what it is aimed at.
There are exactly three moments a Zap is unarguably correct. First, resetting an Inferno Tower or Inferno Dragon: that beam ramps from feeble to lethal in about four seconds, and a stun takes it back to zero, which is often the difference between your tank dying and your tank connecting. Building-targeting. Giant, Balloon and Hog Rider all march past your entire army toward a tower. Prince does not β he charges the closest thing, troop or building, which is exactly why a single 1-elixir Skeletons pack stops a 5-elixir Prince cold. Here's the Rule That Costs New Players the Most Games
Your King Tower is asleep. It does nothing, hits nothing, and defends nothing until one of two things happens: it takes direct damage, or one of your Princess Towers is destroyed. The game never announces this, and it changes how a match should be played from both sides.
On defence, it means a stray Arrows or a Log clipping your own King is a genuine mistake β you just woke up a tower that was going to stay quiet.
